A 35,027lbs kinda day. Except this time around we indulged in the otherworldly pleasures of a forklift. This unearthly machine is something I dont believe we'll be able to live without in the future. Good news all in all is that the books have arrived. Not a day to soon but we're used to that.

I wish I could tell the full tale behind photographing this tattoo. Fortunately the beautiful imagery Horiyasu created renders the need for written words completely unnecessary.... but I'm still going to add a few.

We photographed this undisclosed collector during one of the early Japan jumps. Then on our last trip we were asked to rephotograph his work as tattooer and collector had recently completed the suit. I've withheld the complete image (available here) but its sufficient to say that anyone who dares to look upon it will have the top of their skull shaved off by a flash of burning light. Tattoo lobotomy... I've been stupefied ever since.

The back end work for the 360˚ galleries is nearing completion. Excited about presenting this component of the BloodWork: Bodies project. As this is a first, we've been struggling over many a mountain but of recent it seems we may have finally scaled the last of the programming crags. The precipice is in sight.

I've gone through the entire interactive library during the course of compiling this presentation, and obviously its a curious novelty being able to rotate the collectors, but as a visual tool its real purpose comes into focus. Having the ability to move around the tattoo, and observe how the modular components of large scale tattooing intertwine, seems an indispensable tool. In my own study of tattooing this will be a resource of continual reference.

For your pleasure, click on the image below to view and interact with a working example of a full rotation. The tattoo, of course, was made by the peerless Horiyoshi III.

Again, each copy of the two volume set comes with a code that allows the owner access to the vast ether based catalog.

My level of anticipation and excitement has dramatically increased. Since first viewing this piece of footage from the printer the reverberations of the Heidelberg clicking and clacking has permeated my subconscious where it resonates as stampeding horses on the horizon. Okt 20.

Finished scouring the complete ozalid set for volume one of the two set BloodWork project. Was relieved to only have found a couple errors which were quickly corrected on the printer's end. Now all engines are go to start the actual printing process of book one.

Now I wait for book two ozalids. Down to the wire. Okt 20 feels like tomorrow. I think I am developing an ulcer in my brain...

Received the first set of proofs for book 1 of the two volume BloodWork: Bodies project. Spent the day visually scouring the 400+ loose pages for any errors that may have previously escaped notice.

Couple words that come to mind: massive, visceral.
Phrases: OMG what have I got myself into... again.

Seeing these reaffirms the need to put this into print. We've spent months staring into computers while designing this beast but handling the hard copies is a completely different feeling. One might say it's "analog".

BLOODWORK: 360

In addition to the massive two volume book coming out in Oktober, BloodWork: Bodies will also have an interactive component. We're calling it the 360.

The 360˚ concept developed in response to a common issue when viewing a photographed tattoo. That is "It looks amazing but wish I could see it in person", is a phrase said by tattooers.

In response to this desire to visually move around a large tattoo we sought to manifest the 360˚ rotation. A way to fully rotate and zoom in/out of an image so that the viewer could gain a real understanding of the three dimensional aspects of a tattoo, and what the tattooer is conveying.

The origins of this concept date back... well one can go way back with this, but the most immediate inspiration came from pioneers Joseph Plateau (phenakistoscope) and Eadweard J. Muybridge (zoopraxiscope).

Interesting side note, Muybridge is said to have been an influence on Thomas Edison who himself owned patents for motion picture cameras, and it goes without saying that Edison designed the original "electric pen", precursor to the tattoo machine. The latter having been patented by Samuel O'Reilly.

Anyway, after a few trips to the hardware store we were able to build a solid circular platform that could hold the weight of a human being and also smoothly rotate the individual full circle.

Once in action the subject was asked to stand still on the circular platform while being rotated and photographed in upwards of fifty increments. This was then repeated around the globe until the body of work was complete.

Since then we've been working to develop and/or acquire software that will allow all of the raw material to be compiled into an interactive format. The last few weeks has netted much progress. Soon we'll post a link to one of the interactive images. In the meantime, below is a low res active (although not interactive) 360˚ rotation for your pleasure. This one is by none other than Tin-Tin.

Imagine being able to rotate and zoom high resolution images of all the BloodWork backpieces and bodysuits in a fluid interactive format.... stay tuned.
